The Climbing Academy - The Mothership

Bristol, United Kingdom•4.7(321)•Indoor Climbing

Climb on two floors of bouldering walls with no experience needed, suitable for all ages from babies to adults.

The Mothership is Bristol's premier indoor bouldering facility and one of the most welcoming places in the city to start climbing. Bouldering is climbing close to the ground over soft mats, requiring no ropes and no prior experience. The venue features two whole floors of bouldering walls designed for climbers of all abilities. Families can enjoy drop-in bouldering sessions where children of any age can climb with a registered adult supervisor (one adult can supervise up to two under-16s). The facility also offers friendly bouldering inductions for first-timers, optional staff-led sessions that introduce newcomers to the basics and safety. Over-16s can boulder unsupervised, making it ideal for independent climbers. Beyond casual climbing, The Mothership offers comprehensive youth programs including classes during term time, holiday activities during school breaks, and specialized sessions for different age groups including Tiny Academy for under-5s. The venue also hosts climbing birthday parties for any age and provides sports osteopathy treatment services. The on-site Mothership Café is open to the public, allowing visitors to enjoy refreshments without climbing. Flexible pricing options include pay-per-visit or discounted passes, with a current promotion offering two weeks of unlimited climbing at all TCA centres for the price of one visit.

A wonderful place to climb. Staff are always welcoming and lovely when signing you in. The routes are always varied keeping you in your toes even in grades you are usually comfortable climbing. There is an updated section every week to keep things fresh, and a gym space for additional working out. Thoroughly recommended anyone, climber or not, to visit.

If I had a billion pounds and could build my own gym, this is exactly what I would build. An immaculate, air-conditioned lobby and cafe (my wife says it's the most comfortable climbing gym cafe she's ever sat in - and that's from a sample of about 20!); an attractive, well-stocked shop; large, clean, open changing rooms; a single large room for the bouldering [edit: the owner points out there's also more bouldering, training boards and a gym downstairs!] ; two top-out icebergs in the centre; a cave; and a comp wall! Also the staff were really friendly, smiling and genuine, and parking was available at the front and back. Not just 5/5, this is a definite 10/10 gym.

Excellent climbing gym, fantastic facilities and climbs. Been coming here since moving to Bristol after trying a few out. Always a good difficulty range within grade bands to test yourself with. Having both tension and moon boards on site are great as well. Can get busy at times but always plenty of parking available and the staff are lovely.

Love The Mothership. I've climbed in every centre on Bristol and TCA's venues remain my favourite. Friendly staff, tasty cakes, great problems and a variety of areas. The route setting is thoughtful, often includss decent problem solving over pure strength. The gym is well equipped for training 💪

Great bouldering centre and climbing gym. Its got a fantastic vibe with a wide range of ages participating regularly. Setting is probably harder than other Bristol bouldering gyms but more realistic. Upstairs has two top out boulders and a modern comp wall. Downstairs has was the original bouldering area but is low. There is a well equipped weights gym there too. Staff a friendly and helpful.
