Fairbourne, United Kingdom•4.6(1.3k)•Heritage Site

Ride a historic narrow-gauge railway through coastal Welsh countryside to the Mawddach Estuary, connecting with a scenic ferry to Barmouth.

The Fairbourne Railway is a charming heritage railway that has been operating from Fairbourne village to the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary for over 100 years. Originally established as a two-foot gauge horse-drawn tramway, it was converted to a 15-inch gauge railway in 1916 and completely rebuilt to 12.25-inch gauge in 1986. Today, it operates as one of the Great Little Trains of Wales, offering visitors a unique journey through scenic coastal landscapes. Visitors can experience an authentic railway adventure aboard vintage steam trains that showcase the railway's rich heritage and preserved locomotives. The journey culminates at the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary, where passengers can connect with a ferry service to Barmouth, making it an ideal outing for families exploring North Wales. The railway welcomes dogs and is pushchair-friendly, making it accessible for families with young children and pets. The venue is supported by an active preservation society and volunteer workforce dedicated to maintaining historically important locomotives, carriages, and buildings. Children enjoy special pricing, with kids' tickets available from just £1, making it an affordable family attraction. Visitors can explore the railway's history, learn about its various locomotives and engines, and support the ongoing preservation efforts that keep this Victorian-era railway experience alive.

Lovely little railway, friendly and helpful staff of whom are volunteers. If you visit Barmouth Ferry station there is a "Honesty Fridge" of cold drinks and a self service coffee manchine which is quite welcoming. The Model Railway layout is a must see which is built around a fish pond with a mock-waterfall.

A fun heritage railway, good for a couple hours activity. We got the ferry over to the headland from Barmouth, only took a few minutes. The journey was nice, good views and some interesting sections of track. At the Fairbourne end, there's a miniature railway you can look around, as well as cafe and a bit of history to read up on.

We visited during school half term. The train journey itself isn't really picturesque but it is a bit of a nice novelty for little ones. Carriages are quite small and not the most comfortable, but the trip isnt long so not really an issue. There was a little shop at the station and a cafe (not open when we visited on Sat) at the ferry stop. There are toilets at the ferry stop but these were locked on our outbound journey (open inbound). Walk down to the ferries could be tricky for some - you have to cross sandy dunes and then a rocky shoreline.

Totally worth it! The team had to put on an extra two carriages to fit everyone on due to a coach tour but didn’t affect the timings too much. Approx 20 mins ride each way with a short 5 second tunnel at the Fairbourne end. There is an option to get a ferry over to Barmouth and there is regular services back to Fairbourne and a couple of beaches at the Fairbourne station (with toilets & cafe).
