Beautiful well kept grounds and a fascinating tour by a passionate and compelling tour guide, Carys. Well worth a visit, 5 stars. Ample parking, café and gift shop on site.
A surprisingly fascinating visit — seeing how coins are designed and struck adds a whole new appreciation for everyday currency. The tour is well structured, interactive, and polished, with some cool exhibits and the chance to strike your own coin. Educational without feeling dry, and great for a unique day out. It’s a bit niche, so interest can dip if you’re not into history or production processes. Tours are timed, which can feel slightly rushed, and it’s not the longest experience for the price. Location is also a little out of the way.
As a coin collector visiting Cardiff for the weekend, I decided to go on one of the Royal Mint’s guided tours. Easter Sunday wasn’t ideal for transport, but I got there in just over an hour using (understandably but scarily infrequent) trains and buses. The Royal Mint Experience included lunch, which I had first. You can have anything from the menu; my salmon, eggs and avocado on toast was alright, but the filthy cutlery put me off. An engaging and charismatic Daniel really made the tour: his good humour and eagerness to answer questions is exactly what you hope to see in a guide. As for the Strike Your Own Coin part…this only involved the pressing of a button. A tad underwhelming, but a neat keepsake, nonetheless. Lastly, the exhibition was very extensive and informative.
Learn how the coins are made and the history. Really good place to visit. Recommend to book the tour here so that you can see the machines. Our guide was really good and friendly. Parking lot is not very big. Friendly staff. Cafe and toilets available inside
We were bought a guided tour & lunch gift voucher for two. We were instantly impressed by the Museum area inside & out, it was immaculate. We noticed garden areas, plants and paths were clean, very well maintained. The staff were very friendly and the lunch staff very helpful. Our guide Janenan was very informative & she obviously had plenty of knowledge. She led a very good tour. The Museum again was well organised and had lots of information & visual items to keep you interested. Really enjoyed this area to wander and read. Nice little shop there too. Lunch was great, good choice and the food was lovely. A lovely lady gave us the information we needed as we had a voucher to use, the young man serving was very polite & friendly too. Toilets all all areas were clean and smart. The Mini and Gromit were a winner. We would definitely return again. Great Museum to visit.
