We visited one day in the week for a walk & look as never been before, what a wonderful lovely area for having a walk. To see the highland cows is an absolute joy, they were quite high up, so a little leg stretch. We didn't cover all the area, & will be going back, as there is quite a decent sized area, and some different paths off, so you can walking Cranford and a couple of other places. There is a large field with picnic tables and seats, but unfortunately no toilets. Absolutely worth a visit.
Very cool place also very chill even though we got lost but I had a very nice time and amazing walk
nice open space to start with a few little trails, often a little over grown and definitely uneven but.... Highland cows roaming so worth a visit. parking was free when we went and no sign of pay machines
Attractive area. Free car park but can get very busy. There is a good possibility that a coffee Van will be available by the car park. Free entry. See photo for coffee van opening times.
Twywell Hills & Dales is the sort of countryside that makes you feel both very peaceful and slightly heroic, even if all you have really done is walk uphill in sensible shoes. It looks beautifully wild and untouched, but this place actually has some proper history under its muddy boots. These hills were once worked hard for ironstone, and the land still carries the quiet echoes of its industrial past. Old quarry shapes, hidden paths and gentle dips in the landscape are not just “natural features” but the result of people grafting away here many years ago. So while it feels like you have escaped into the middle of nowhere, you are actually wandering across a landscape that has lived a full working life and has now retired very gracefully. Today it is all rolling views, wildflowers, big skies and fresh air that makes your lungs feel smug. You go for a quick stroll and somehow end up on a thoughtful ramble, stopping often to admire the scenery and pretend you are in a countryside advert. Dogs absolutely love it, humans love it nearly as much, and everyone looks better with a bit of Twywell mud on their shoes. Then you remember the Barista Bus is nearby, so your noble historical walk can end with coffee, cake and a bacon roll, because even former ironstone hills would agree that balance is important. A beautiful place to stretch your legs, clear your head and feel oddly proud of yourself for simply being outside.
