Underground Passages

Exeter, United Kingdom•4.5(570)•Heritage Site, Museum

Explore medieval underground passages built to deliver fresh water through Exeter's walled city, with guided tours through narrow historic vaults lit throughout.

Underground Passages is a unique heritage attraction showcasing Exeter's remarkable medieval engineering. The passages were originally designed and built to transport clean drinking water from natural springs outside the city walls through lead pipes into the heart of the city. When these pipes developed leaks, workers created vaulted passageways to access them for repairs without disrupting the city streets above. Exeter remains the only city in the UK with underground passages of this type, and guided tours have been offered since the 1930s. Visitors begin their experience at an exciting interpretation centre featuring interactive displays, including a talking medieval figure, high-speed video fly-throughs, a full-size model section of the passages, and archaeological artefacts. The complete visit includes a 10-minute film presentation, a 25-minute guided tour underground through the lit historic passages, and time to explore the exhibition. The attraction is suitable for children aged 5 and above, with younger children permitted free access to the exhibition only. All children underground must be accompanied by an adult. The experience is particularly engaging for families interested in history and medieval engineering, though visitors should be aware that the passages are confined spaces with narrow sections and low heights. The venue recommends sensible footwear and advises visitors with claustrophobia or certain medical conditions to contact them in advance. Booking is strongly recommended, especially during weekends and school holidays.

Great visit today and probably 50 years since the last time as a school boy. Very interesting display, lots of data and models. Great guide with Jackson who was very knowledgeable. Pleasantly surprised that there was around 8 people on the tour which was a good sized group for the space. Highlight was seeing that the remaining part of the East Gate was visible, but sadly the only part of any of the city gates.

We absolutely loved our visit to the underground passages. Our guide, Katie, was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable about the passages and enthusiastically answered my son’s many many questions. The experience far surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend!

I absolutely loved this tour, being a history nut it was fascinating to hear and see the story of how clean water was brought yo the city of Exeter. The tour takes you through some fairly narrow tunnels but all but one (which is optional) are walkable. The low, optional one meant I had to get on all fours, but not my knees to pass through. I would go again in a heartbeat.

I visited Exeter's underground passages and had a fascinating time exploring this unusual part of the city's history. The visit starts in the centre, where short film give you helpful background. After that you are taken down into the narrow tunnels in a small group with a guide, who explains the history and points out interesting features as you go. The tunnel themselves are tight and low in places, which adds to the sense of adventure. Hard hat is provided. Overall, it is a unique way to learn about Exeter. Definitely recommend it to anyone interested in local history or looking for something a bit diffrent to do.
