I found this place a bargain at only £10 per adult and only £5 per child. There's alot to look at and things for the kids to do while walking round
Absolutely amazing experience at the Verulamium Museum! We visited St Albans for the weekend and decided to drop by the museum spontaneously. We got tickets in person at the kiosk on the inside of the museum without any wait! Inside, we were surprised by an amazing collection of Roman artefacts. Most luckily, I would say, we managed to catch a talk by one of the museum’s tour guides (at no extra pay)! It was incredibly insightful and without a doubt made the visit a lot more informative and enjoyable. Definitely would recommend this place for anyone who enjoys museums, ancient history and architecture! And definitely make sure to visit the mosaic pavilion in the park and parts of the Roman wall that are also part of the museum! It’s amazingly impressive and well-preserved history!
I recently visited the museum on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised by the interesting displays of Roman archaeology. I especially enjoyed the array of mosaics and the interactive screens of Roman life. Remember to check out the draws under the displays for more artefacts to peruse. Of special interest to us archaeology buffs is the fact that the famous Mortimer Wheeler excavated large parts of Verulamium. There is a book showing the excavation of some of the mosaics found including published archaeological photographs. The museum is busy between 10 am and 2 pm on weekdays because of school visits but quieter after this time. It is worth checking out the museum shop. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The layout of the museum is well designed and structured. I recommend purchasing a Verulamium Museum Guidebook which contains a myriad of information pertaining to the archaeology and history of Verulam. The Museum Shop sells a good selection of historical postcards, books, stationery, mugs, confectionery and other paraphernalia.
Verulamium is a beautiful museum of the Roman Empire. 🔱It was really fascinating to visit this museum. I was amazed by the Roman lifestyle. Especially when I saw a middle-aged man's skeleton, I was shocked to see that his teeth 🦷were in good condition, which indicates that they had healthy food habits 🍒. One thing I have to mention about them is their room heating system🌡 called hypocaust, an amazing method to heat an entire room 2000 years ago. I should also talk about their construction methods1👷♂️🏗, which match modern construction methods. And their mosaic floors and wall paintings are really amazing. I would especially like to talk about a mosaic painting in a half-circle shape, which amazed me immensely. In that mosaic work, they purposely made some mistakes🙅♀️, otherwise the God would be angry at them for their perfection😮. In Roman faith, humans can't be more perfect than a God. We also met an archaeologist who explained Roman lifestyles and excavation. Totally, I loved this trip to the Verulamium museum!😍🥰
We were in St Albans for a few days. I didn't know what to expect as it's so close to London, a place I cannot abide. But it was SO beautiful. Very quaint and very English. The cathedral is wonderful with medieval wallpaintings still intact and two saints shrines. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. But the big surprise was the roman remains. In the middle of the park below the cathedral, in a small building, is a beautiful roman mosaic. Then we found the museum. Here are some fabulous mosaics, plasterwork and all sorts of other finds from the old roman town of Verulamium. I was particularly taken with the contents of a carpenters workshop. The hand tools were not dissimilar to those used today. Back outside, we found considerable lengths of the old roman walls. What a wonderful place.
