Explore a restored Victorian railway platform from 1860, a hidden heritage gem on an elevated embankment revealing the village's railway history.

Wheathampstead Station Platform is a fascinating heritage site that transports visitors back to the Victorian era. Originally opened on September 1st, 1860, the station served as a vital transport hub connecting rural Wheathampstead to London and Birmingham via a single-track branch line between Hatfield and Dunstable. Following the Beeching Report, the station closed on April 26th, 1965, and was gradually forgotten as tracks, buildings, and surrounding infrastructure were dismantled. For over 40 years, the platform remnants lay hidden on a 4-meter elevated embankment, obscured by ivy and vegetation. In 2009, local heritage enthusiasts rediscovered the site and embarked on an ambitious restoration project to preserve this important piece of village history in time for the station's 150th anniversary. The restored platform now stands as a testament to the dedication of community volunteers who painstakingly cleared, restored, and stabilized the remaining Victorian structure. Visitors can explore this outdoor heritage site and gain insight into how the railway transformed the lives of rural residents during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The elevated embankment location offers a unique perspective of the village and its development over time. With free entry and dog-friendly policies, the station platform welcomes families and history enthusiasts of all ages to discover this hidden gem and connect with Wheathampstead's rich railway heritage.

Beautifully restored station platform kept in shape by volunteers. Great statue of George Bernard Shaw, plenty of interesting information boards, mini trains for children to sit on, picnic bench. We'll worth visiting. A quiet little spot to sit or picnic too.
