Explore the oldest surviving heavy iron forge in the world, a Scheduled Ancient Monument featuring working exhibits, historic buildings, and picnic areas.

Wortley Top Forge is a water-powered heavy iron forge with a remarkable history stretching back to at least 1640. This Scheduled Ancient Monument showcases the industrial heritage of South Yorkshire and operates as an industrial museum with many working exhibits that bring Victorian-era iron forging to life. Visitors can explore the forge's impressive machinery, including a large breast-shot water wheel that drives a tilt hammer historically used to forge wrought iron railway axles. The site features several historic buildings including the main forge, workshops, and reconstructed cottages with period features such as a 1900 kitchen, wash house, and privy, offering insights into the lives of workers in this industrial landscape. Beyond the industrial attractions, the grounds provide natural spaces for families to enjoy. Picnic areas are available throughout the site, and a nature trail allows visitors to explore the surrounding environment. The venue welcomes families of all ages and is pushchair-friendly, making it accessible for visitors with young children. Guided tours are available to enhance the experience and provide deeper understanding of the forge's 370-year history and its significance to iron and steel production.

Fabulous place. Wonderful volunteers, loads of interesting buildings saved and bought back to life in the workshops which are still used by the engineers. Take a tour, it really makes a difference to what you are seeing and tells the story behind the place. £5 only for parking and entry.

Worsley Top Forge is a fantastic place to visit for anyone interested in Britain's industrial heritage. The dedicated volunteers give excellent informative guided tours and you are free to walk around and explore your self. A lot of the machinery is running and the miniature railway gives rides. From the water powered hammer, to the machine shop and the blacksmiths demonstration there is so much to see a visit is highly recommend.

A fantastic place to visit, especially if have either a interest in steam engines or history, a hidden gem. The volunteers are really friendly and knowledgeable, the history of the forge is really interesting and the tour is hugely helpful in making sense of what you see, how it all works, just fabulous, we could have stay there all day. The miniature steam engines were great and smelt glorious..loved it. Everyone should own about this place..
