Lovely site to visit, it is small but there is plenty to see. Such great detail in the buildings. So interesting to see the artistic reconstructions to watch the short films in the Archaeology cinema. We learnt so much. Have recommended to friends. Fair entry price which includes return visits.

This place is amazing! So much to do and learn, whether you are a history nerd or a newbie you can get really involved and find out so many things! It really brings history alive for people of all ages. We had a great time dressing up and also exploring the atmosphere of the buildings. Also really enjoyed the film in the cinema shed. Must visit and a great experience for the price.

Amazing place to visit. The reconstructions are great to see but the little touches make it come alive with clothes to wear, a fire and candles burning, horns to blow, underfloor heating and fun activities. The staff were incredible, knowledgeable and engaging. So worth a visit!!!

This was a fun experience. There are several buildings to explore - and Iron Age round house, a Roman dining room (with a hypocaust), an Saxon long hall and a Archaeological dig shed. There is also a Viking Cargo Boat. Of course all these buildings are reproductions, but based on real Archaeological finds from the local area. The attention to detail is amazing. My favorite was the Saxon long hall. Sitting in front of the fire on what was a chilly day, I was transported back to the time of Alfred the Great. I was thinking about the great battles against the implacable Viking foe, all laid out in a wonderful mural in the hall. Magical. There are volunteers on site who provide useful information. You are also lent an informative site guide. We were at the site for around 90 mins before heading off for coffee. There is a cafe and an enchanting craft centre - some very beautiful pieces were for sale. The wetlands for bird watching is just up the road and also has recreations of two famous trackways - the Sweet Track - in its original location - and the Meare Heath Track. These are ancient wooden walkways allowing easier travel over the wetlands. Highly recommended.

The place is only open on a Sunday, so make sure you plan in advance. We made it part of a wider visit to the area- we walked through the woods and wetlands first, taking in the Sweettrack and such. The place itself has three separate buildings now. An archaeological recreation of a Roman dining room, a Saxon longhouse and the tin hut used by early archaeologists who worked in the area. We were met by the incredible and enthusiastic gentlemen on the entrance- lovely guy, big props to him by the way and we were given free licence to wander round. The places were well built and impressive and we certainly enjoyed our time there. They do a couple of kids activities to encourage interaction from the youngsters. All in all, a great day. Support these wonderful people, they are doing an amazing job. They are volunteers and enthusiasts who are bringing history to life and figuring out real info but putting things into action. The gentleman on the entrance was telling us how the hypocaust to seven days of continuous use to actually heat the dining room. Real history in action!
