I think we're very fortunate to have the woods and the vast open space. Nice to sit or walk, grab a drink from the cafe, watch cricket or games being played. Very popular with dog walkers and the lovely big greenhouse. The whole place is very well looked after. So much history here and even a garden to sit in. I often come here to read and relax and read a book. Attached is a photo of the sun setting as I was leaving. Just stunning...

Located in Eltham, Avery Hill Park is a magnificent 86-acre estate that offers a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Victorian era. The land was once the private playground of the "Nitrate King," Colonel John North, who transformed the grounds into a showpiece of botanical passion. Today, it stands as one of South East London’s most significant green spaces, blending vast recreational fields with high-end horticultural history. The park’s undisputed crown jewel is the Winter Garden, a massive Grade II listed Victorian conservatory. As the second-largest glasshouse in London after Kew Gardens, it remains a breathtaking architectural feat, housing a collection of temperate and tropical plants that flourish beneath its soaring glass domes. Beyond the glass, the park opens up into wide, rolling parklands, formal gardens, and a fragment of the ancient shrubbery that once surrounded the mansion. Whether you are exploring the exotic flora of the conservatory or wandering through the tree-lined avenues that burst into color during the spring, Avery Hill provides a sense of scale and elegance that is truly regal. Tips for your visit: • The Winter Garden: This is a must-see! Entry is free, and it offers a warm, tropical escape even on the coldest London days. Look for the impressive statue of Galatea in the center. • Tree Trail: The park is home to a fantastic variety of exotic and native trees; keep an eye out for the towering Redwoods and the ancient oaks that define the landscape. • Sporting Space: With its extensive flat grasslands, it’s a premier spot for local football and cricket matches, making it a lively place to visit on weekend mornings. • The Café: Located near the mansion, the park café is a great spot to grab a tea before heading out to explore the more rugged, wooded edges of the estate. Avery Hill Park is a sophisticated and multi-layered sanctuary where Victorian architectural ambition meets the quiet beauty of the natural world. 🌳🌿🏛️
