Visit websiteSadly only a flying visit this time to see the ‘Fashion Extremes!’ exhibition at Bankfield, today, on the top floor, but what a great introduction to a fabulous find - well done Calderdale Museums! The welcome was warm and helpful, even on a hot, quiet, weekday afternoon and the enthusiasm of the desk staff, before my visit and following it, added to such an enjoyable experience. The exhibition was a joy, beautifully curated and with such a good balance of a light touch with ample historic information and context for the wide ranging clothes displayed. And an interesting guide to female textile collectors to take away. Thank you… Repeat visits will definitely be on the plan for returns to Halifax!
Lovely free museum in a beautiful building. The volunteers were really sweet. I especially loved getting to see the famous Mr. Darcy's wet shirt from the 1995 Pride & prejudice BBC mini series 👀 Loved learning all kinds of random facts about Halifax and seeing some cool costumes and antique clothing. We spent about an hour here. If you want to read everything you'll be there longer though!
Loved this place, soent a couple of hours here with the hubby. Not much for younger ones. Small cafe with coffee and ore packages cake and buscuits sort of stuff. Id recommend dojng the trail in the village (leaflet avsilable inside) Beautiful buikding and interrsting exhibits, especially military (which I usually don't like)
Well worth the steady climb up the hills going out of Halifax! This is a large and ornate house set in beautiful grounds. The entrance is spectacular with beautiful decorated ceiling and walls surrounding the sweeping stairwell. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable. There are many sections including a really wonderful display of costumes used in such dramas as Emma, Bridgerton, Downton Abbey and Victoria. The section dedicated to the Yorkshire regiments is very informative and moving as is the section exploring death and mourning. Some sections are closed or will be closed to enable repairs to the roof but there is still so much to see. When visiting remember to look upas each room has the most ornate ceiling embellishments. Good toilets and there’s also a cafe. I will definitely revisit when back in Halifax.
A lovely museum with an unexpected Fashion through the ages with The Costume Drama Display. Loved that they tied it in with Yorkshire, including Mr. Darcy’s shirt. Liked the Halifax room with the sweets and cat’s eyes etc. I think it was also a great idea to have all the feature display cases in the main room. Enjoyed the militaristic rooms too. To say it is a free local museum, it’s one of the best small local museums I’ve been in. Staff were also friendly and happy to chat about the displays. There is a good amount of parking spots and also a small cafe that serves tea and coffee and snacks. Now we just need to work on the #sconeAsInGone!
