Cartwright Hall, located in Lister Park, is currently hosting the Turner Prize 2025 as part of the City of Culture Events. It is free entry but if you are going to the Turner Prize exhibition you need to book a time slot. The building is very grand and has been well used for the exhibition; it was also good to see information about the history of the Turner Prize and also permanent work by Lowry and Hockney. To enter the cafe you have to go outside then back in. It was quite busy when I visited but service was relatively quick. I found the accessible loo and baby changing facilities to be disappointing. The door was supposed to slide for access but was very heavy and unwieldy-not easy access for me, never mind someone in a wheelchair. There was a chair with a “Mum” cushion which was a nice touch but it was next to the toilet which did not have a lid… The emergency cord was near the door rather than the toilet and tied up rather than down to floor level so totally useless.
Absolutely beautiful building and grounds. Visited to see the Turner Prize nominee exhibition. Staff were helpful on arrival, scanning time slotted/pre booked tickets. Given an information leaflet and directions for the galleries. The videos in the main foyer for the nominees was very busy so we only got to listen to 2 of the four as people were queuing, you can watch them online instead though. The toilets in the main foyer are fantastic in that they have original wooden seats, marble sinks, beautidul original features. Shame the taps were either not working/dodgy and there was only a bar of soap. The exhibition areas were set out beautifully and the gardens outside were lovely. Would bw worth a visit in warmer weather when the boating lake is open. Didn't visit the cafe on this occasion.
