Black Rock Sands (Traeth y Graig Ddu) is a spacious sandy beach located in Morfa Bychan, Porthmadog, Gwynedd. Despite its name, the beach features fine sand and is remarkably open and wide. The western side is dominated by distinctive multicolored rock formations, caves, and tidal pools that are accessible at low tide, creating an exciting natural environment for exploration. Unique to this beach, visitors are permitted to drive vehicles on the sand, making it popular with motorboats and jet skis in designated areas. The beach is equally suited to traditional family activities such as picnicking and building sandcastles. The local sand dunes have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to their natural historical significance and abundant marine wildlife. The beach is ideal for families seeking seaside adventures, with pushchair access available and free entry. Dog owners should note that restrictions apply to certain areas. Visitors should be aware of safety hazards including strong currents, incoming tides, steep gradients, and active water sports. The nearby Gwynedd Council manages parking facilities on the beach.

Black Rock Sands is a fantastic beach and well worth a visit. The wide stretch of golden sand is beautiful, and the views of the mountains in the distance make it even more special. It’s one of the few beaches where you can drive onto the sand, which is very convenient for families with children or anyone carrying beach equipment. The beach is clean, spacious, and perfect for long walks, relaxing, building sandcastles, or enjoying water sports. Even on busier days, there’s plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the surroundings. The sunsets here are stunning, creating a peaceful atmosphere to end the day. A great destination for a family day out. Highly recommended!

What a hidden gem! Large area of Golden Sands perfect for families and older folk as you can drive your car onto the beach and park. The waters were very shallow and warm, ideal for toddlers and young children. There is a daily charge to park on the beach, which you pay on entry and is currently £8.50 for the day. Need to be aware that the tide comes in very fast and you need to make sure you can move your car as a number of vehicles got stranded and had to be towed out!

One of the best beaches in North West Wales which we have visited! Dog friendly with restrictions on one side - when we visited on 23rd April the vast majority of the beach was open to dogs. You have to pay £8 to park there for the day, but you can drive straight on to the beach and park wherever you want. Most people tend to park at the back near the dunes. There are free public toilets at the entrance of the beach.

Absolutely stunning place, having travelled to many beaches around the uk this is definitely one if the best. Make sure to check tide times if you want to walk out to the lighthouse. Parking can be limited so get there early!
