My second visit here and once again loved it. We got talking to a lady (with walking stick, sorry we did not get your name) that works here, in the gallery who engaged with us and knows way more than she will admit. Looking into the paintings with us, not just looking at them. The boy on the sea frount was her and our fav. We had an amazing day, and the lady also mentioned the opening up of different things in the area in September. Fantastic!
Amazing that this is free! Chaotic and not 100% clear from the website but it's effectively four museums in one building, with a library. As someone visiting Doncaster, I found it genuinely interesting (particularly the Sir Nigel Gresley pop-up, the Sand House exhibit and the railwayana on loan from The Grammar School). Given Doncaster's importance as a railway town, there really should be more on the history of The Plant - you could have a museum on this alone! Overall, it's well worth a visit and 2 hours passed very quickly.
The Danum Gallery in Doncaster is a vibrant cultural hub that beautifully combines art, history, and community engagement. Visitors are drawn not only to its impressive exhibitions and library facilities but also to the welcoming atmosphere that permeates the entire space. A standout feature of the Danum Gallery experience is undoubtedly Café 1910, located within the gallery. This charming, family-run café offers a delightful retreat for visitors, serving freshly made sandwiches, a wide range of delicious baked goods, and award-winning coffee. The café’s homemade cakes, including favorites like the lemon drizzle and rainbow cake, have earned high praise for their quality and taste. The friendly staff and clean, modern setting make it a perfect spot to relax and recharge after exploring the gallery. Café 1910’s commitment to quality and service complements the cultural richness of the Danum Gallery, making the visit not just an artistic journey but also a culinary pleasure. Whether you are stopping by for a quick coffee or a leisurely lunch, the café enhances the overall appeal of the gallery, making it a must-visit destination in Doncaster. I recommend the scones... excellent value!
Free museum and art gallery concentrating on Doncaster’s own heritage. Pleased to see an ichthyosaur and Roman remains alongside more recent industrial history. It’s a well designed and accessible building, light and bright, especially in the 1910 cafe. Good coffee and huge scones, plenty of vegan options. There are lots of activities for all ages, and plenty of parking in the neighbourhood.
Conveniently located in Doncaster's Cultural Quarter, Danum Gallery, Library & Museum has lots of interesting displays about Doncaster's history, from railway locomotives to paintings. There is plenty to hold the interest. The staff are welcoming and helpful. Free to visit. Definitely worth calling in if you are in Doncaster.
