What a fantastic day out! We took our 4 and 9 year old daughters on the steam train and steamer river cruise for a day out in and around Dartmouth. We all absolutely loved it. Staff were all super friendly and polite and the transport was amazing. An incredible experience which comes highly recommended!

Visited on 10 August 2026. Access from local streets to the heritage part of the train station. Lovely gift shop, and old train station style toilets with tiled walls. The staff were all lovely, who made the effort to make both humans and dog welcome. Trains lovely, seating quite good condition. Sometimes you go on these trains and no effort is made to keep up the maintenance, but on the trains we were on, the seats were all very comfortable. Views amazing. We travelled from Painton to Kingsmear on the train, treated to spectacular scenery and getting off the train in kingsmear on a nice summery day was a treat, it was like stepping off the train in to another world. I have often heard this part of England being referred to as the English riviera and thought it a bit of marketing. But, I get it now. If you don't, take this wonderful train from Paignton to Kingsmear and explore. The conductor on our train was especially nice, we had met him in the giftshop at Paignton and saw him on both trains. He was particularly nice to the dog. The trains are quite frequent. The one we went down on was a Steam express. We later returned on the diesel (due to the heat they were curtailing the use of steam trains for obvious reasons - respect to them for doing this.

A good and scenic railway especially in the observation carriage. But that's £3 extra and it's far from well ventilated. They don't do day tickets, it's just a round trip. Comes with a few ferry too. Friendly staff. too. NICE CARRIAGES. Costs £26. I suggest buying the train AND steam boat too.

In my view, one of, if not the most scenic lines in the country! Lovely locomotives and staff members there are all really engaging. A great day out for all ages! It’s a shame that the intermediate stops between Paignton and Kingswear are no longer used - a hop on/ hop off ticket would be nice to explore the wider area, but this is only a minor niggle and in no way detracts from the five star rating of my review.

Excellent day out and a great way to see some beautiful views and sites. Good fun on the steam train and my little princess really enjoyed herself. Some beautifully stunning scenery to take in on the train journey aswell as the river cruise up the dart seeing the harbour and the picturesque town of Dartmouth and all the surrounding areas. Highly recommend.
