Fareham, United Kingdom•4.6(365)•Beaches, Nature Reserve

Explore a scenic shingle beach with coastal walks, wildlife spotting, and views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Hill Head is an attractive coastal destination located south of Stubbington, featuring a lovely shingle beach that forms Fareham's boundary with the sea. The area offers visitors a blend of seaside charm and natural heritage, with panoramic views across the Solent—one of the world's busiest sea lanes—and clear sightlines to the Isle of Wight and Queen Victoria's former residence, Osborne House. The venue serves as an excellent starting point for fine coastal walks, with routes extending eastwards to Lee-on-the-Solent and westwards to Meon shore and the River Hamble estuary. Beyond the beach, the surrounding area encompasses approximately 1,000 acres of farmland managed as the Brownwich and Chilling nature reserve, featuring numerous footpaths and Brownwich Pond—ideal for spotting wildfowl and waterlilies. Hill Head is suitable for families of all ages seeking outdoor recreation, nature exploration, and coastal walks. The free access and dog-friendly environment make it an ideal destination for families wanting to combine beach relaxation with countryside discovery. The area's rural character and rich natural heritage offer a more peaceful alternative to busier neighbouring destinations.

It was great, not busy at all on a very sunny Saturday but check the tides before you travel because at one point we had to walk very far to reach the water. Good for paddle boarding if it’s not too windy. Very basic coffee shop selling mainly cakes. Toilets nearby.

Comes well recommend but you need to pick the day / time carefully because it gets very crowded. Great views, long seaside walks and good parking for the early birds.

I live on hill head, regurarly walk and swim there all year around. There are many toilets down the seaside from Tichfileld Haven to Lee-on-the-Solent 5-6 blocks. Yes, you pay for parking if you get there by car, but it's not too expensive.

Great area for coastal walks. Always some activities going on - sailing, swimming, board surfing, kayaking, etc. Lovely views over to the Isle of Wight. Beach is mostly stony & tide goes out a long way, so water is quite shallow & safe.
