Visit websitewow! simply beautiful to walk around here. I wasn’t able to see everything because I came during the heatwave, and it became too much in the afternoon, but I will definitely come back when the weather is sunny without being overwhelming so I can explore the rest. the views are absolutely stunning, and the trees are breathtaking!
Painshill is a stunning hidden gem for a green day trip near London, blending nature with artistic landscaping—imagine Bridgerton-esque gardens featuring lakes, temples, and striking viewpoints. The park is laid out as a walking trail where every turn presents a new picturesque “scene”. It's located in Cobham, Surrey (KT11 1AG), roughly 20 miles southwest of central London, Painshill is a carefully restored 18th-century landscape garden crafted between 1738 and 1773 by Charles Hamilton. It’s regarded as a “living work of art” thanks to its beautiful views, lakes, and architectural elements. Highlights include: * Serpentine Lake with its charming bridges and scenic outlooks. * The Crystal Grotto, one of England’s largest grottoes, adorned with sparkling crystals. * Decorative follies such as the Gothic Temple & Tower, Ruined Abbey, Turkish Tent, and Hermitage.
Really beautiful day out, even in the rain. The red route took us about 2 hours. We did get a bit lost, the signage isn't the best, but it's really worth it. It was relatively quiet when we went and we got to spend time in mostly everything with no other people in there, even the crystal grotto. Highly recommend
Painshill Park is a beautifully restored 18th‑century landscape garden spread across 160 acres, offering a wonderfully scenic walking experience that feels both peaceful and immersive. The park’s most breathtaking feature is the Crystal Grotto, a sparkling, hand‑crafted cave that looks almost otherworldly and is widely considered a must‑see, though visitors should check its opening times in advance. The grounds include a large, serene lake and a series of picturesque follies such as the Gothic Tower, the Ruined Abbey, and the Turkish Tent, all positioned to create striking views as you walk. There are two main routes to explore: a 2.5‑mile historic walk that winds through the park’s most dramatic viewpoints, with some steep sections, and a shorter, fully accessible route that still offers lovely scenery. While the landscape is undeniably beautiful, some visitors find the paper map a little difficult to follow, which can lead to minor navigation hiccups. Certain features, like the Chinese Water Bridge, may also be closed at times for renovation. Painshill offers several amenities, including Hamilton’s Tea Room for refreshments, a gift shop that even sells local wine, and plenty of picnic areas for those who want to relax by the water or under the trees. Booking tickets online is recommended, as it can save money and streamline the visit. Although the entry price is often considered on the higher side, many feel that the combination of sweeping views, unique follies, and tranquil walking routes makes the experience worthwhile. Overall, Painshill Park is an enchanting place for anyone who enjoys nature, history, photography, or simply a peaceful day outdoors, with its vast landscapes and standout attractions creating a memorable visit from start to finish.
The grounds are beautiful, the walks we'll marked, easy paths. A crystal grotto, Turkish tent, watermill, gazebo looking over the lake and a victorian folly tower. So much to enjoy. Refreshments reasonable and a good selection with seating inside and out. Visiting in late Feb provided a vista of daffodils and drifts of snowdrop. Not too crowded either. Easy carparking and good directions from the A3.
