This one of my top hidden gem museums in london . Always something good here . And will take an hour max to do . Free but please make a donation. Just saw the Hockney exhibit there - pictured and was outstanding
One of my favourite galleries in London, mainly because of how it fits into the park. Serpentine is made up of two galleries, North and South, both sitting inside Kensington Gardens, so you can easily come across one while you are simply walking through the park. The South Gallery was originally a tea room before becoming an art gallery in 1970, and I really like the idea of having a free contemporary art space in such a setting. I’ve been a few times and always enjoy the fact that you can just walk in without having to make a whole plan around it. This time I saw Cecily Brown’s exhibition, which I really enjoyed, and there are also usually outdoor installations and the Pavilion around the galleries. It is a relatively small space, which makes it easy to visit even if you only have a bit of time, and I think it works particularly well for families and children too. You can book a ticket, but in my experience I wouldn’t plan too much around it — it’s the kind of gallery I like being able to walk into while already spending an afternoon in the park.
I attended the excellent David Hockney Exhibit. This is good space surrounded by the beauty of Hyde park. There is also a small shop and a large cafe next door, though the cafe can get very busy.
Very small museum perfect for single artist exhibits. I saw Cecily Brown here and it was fantastic. They also have one of the better museum book stores—especially worthwhile to check out their close out section in the back.
A gem of a gallery in Hyde Park. Often free to visit (they ask you to register for a free ticket online) with a diverse and intriguing range of artists. Just the right size for a leisurely visit compared to the blockbuster shows at the big galleries. In the summer there is the added attraction of a themed pavilion next door usually with a cafe.
