Picture the scene. You're walking 🚶‍♂️ through Chester, admiring the splendour all around you and it starts raining 🌧. What's a person to do? Being a Boro (Ironopolis) boy there's a possibility of rust setting in so I popped into the Grosvenor Museum. Shrewd move. They suggest a three quid contribution but don't push it. I, hang my head in shame, did my usual thing and treated it as a freebie. Lots of local history to be found, some splendid artwork from all manner of genres, and some helpful staff. If you're in Chester and it starts raining..... (or just pop in regardless of the weather!)

This gallery provides deep insights into the lives and military presence of the Roman Legions in Britain. Period House: At the rear of the museum, there is a connected townhouse featuring rooms styled from different historical periods, including the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. Natural History: Galleries dedicated to the local landscape and wildlife offer a look at the geology and biodiversity of the Cheshire region. Art and Silver: The museum also houses a notable collection of silver and fine art, highlighting the craftsmanship and wealth associated with Chester's history. The museum is typically open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and on Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (it is closed on Mondays). I do love visiting local museums and seeing that Chester was a Roman town, it's no surprise that there is a lot of Roman artifacts! There is a particularly good display of Roman alter and memorial stones, and a video explaining the story behind one of the memorial stones but with a spooky twist. There is also a video about the development of Chester and lots of information about the Roman settlement and amphitheatre. As with lots of local museums I have visited, there is a natural history section and an art gallery. We very nearly missed the house, 20 Castle Street, that is attached to the museum and has reconstructed room displays from different periods in time. Free to visit but donations appreciated.

The Roman section is especially fascinating, with mosaics, tombstones, and everyday items from when Chester was a major Roman fortress. There’s plenty to keep children occupied, with interactive displays and lots to explore. Entry is free, with donations welcome. There’s also a small gift shop and a café, which are perfect for a break after looking around. The museum is easy to get to, with several car parks nearby and Chester Castle just a short walk away. Grosvenor Museum is well worth a visit for a relaxed and educational day out.
