The Gallery has a programme of exhibitions which change every six months bringing in new loans or featuring the work of other artists as well as Stanley Spencer. The current summer exhibition, which opened this Easter - Love & Landscape: Stanley Spencer in Suffolk. It’s a rare treat to see these Suffolk works especially the iconic Southwold (1937) right in the heart of Spencer’s Cookham. The personal items like the letter on wallpaper and family portraits really bring his story and connection to Suffolk to life. It was a treat to see Hilda Carline’s own self-portrait and her affectionate painting of their daughter, Unity, as well as Richard Carline's large figure group, Gathering on the Terrace (1925) which gives such a great sense of the group they were all part of in Hampstead. Definitely worth the visit to the Gallery and the village where Stanley was born and lived.

Made the pilgrimage to Cookham via the river path to see where Stanley lived, worked & played. Less cars on the roads of Cookham in his day. Interesting seeing the ‘Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta’ lower down from its original height, which makes it possible to see all the details, excellent.

A small but rewarding museum in this converted Chapel formerly attended by his family. If you don't know Spencer's art, learn about his life, his contemporaries at art school, his skill and his curious mixture of the earthly and the visionary. If you already know Spencer's work you'll love this gem of a gallery!
