It’s a great spot; you can climb one of the cathedral towers, which offers a stunning view of the city. It is well worth a visit, but be prepared for a challenging climb up a spiral staircase—around 200–250 (small) steps. I also recommend arriving at least an hour and a half before closing if you plan to go up.
Such a beautiful cathedral and home to the Archbishops of York, as well as the tomb of St William in the crypt. There are beautiful medical stained glass windows, some of which famously are dedicated to local legend St Cuthbert. The chapter house is hugely impressive as well, with both tiled floors and a painted ceiling. Especially moving is the new statue of Queen Elizabeth II outside the great western doors, and the statue of Constantine the Great, who was proclaimed Emperor of Rome on this spot in 306 AD.
York Minster is a "must visit" place when in York. We had a short wait to queue, though you can purchase tickets beforehand which will fast track you in. Once inside, the vastness of the place has to be witnessed. It looked very clean inside but considering the large number of visitors, was not crowded at all. We were aware of a short service taking place in the centre and everyone respected that. The most intriguing part of the building is the Chapter House. The decoration and architectural designs are mind boggling. The small animal and human figureens dotted between the pillars are incredible and could easily be missed. There was a sense of calmness about it and later on, a meeting was taking place. Under the foundations is the Minster Museum, describing the long history of the Minster, York, and the Roman influence. It was a fascinating encounter, similar to visits to Lincoln and Chester. I think York Minster is unique in having its own Police Constabulary. I say this as I have not heard of any other high church having such a Force. We noticed officers outside and inside, patrolling. We felt a calmness, no one rushing here and there, a relaxing visit.
The year-long valid ticket was great for us as we arrived on the wrong day for the crypt visit, but could do it on our way back from our trip. The staff is incredibly friendly and helps you realize how amazing this monument is. Check the opening times before visiting and marvel at this wonder of historical architecture.
York Minster is absolutely beautiful and well worth visiting. The admission price is on the higher side but there is a huge amount to see, including the fascinating Undercroft Museum beneath the cathedral, where you can explore Roman, Viking and medieval remains. You can also climb the 275 medieval steps to the top of the Central Tower, the panoramic views over York are spectacular.
