Laundry Day. Ever wish you could wash that 'whatever' right out of your hair? Then take to the sand, sea, sky and the shore. The shore doesn't just feel a certain way—it looks like a magnificent textile landscape, as if Mother Nature had covered and clothed herself in a luxury fabric far beyond human fortune. The Beach here stretches across an entire spectrum of sand, and some clay, woven from the crisp, wind-blown dunes of Alabaster and pale sand into a canvas of unbleached Ecru linen and Oatmeal speckled with greys of seal and granite. At one point it is a landscape of tweed perhaps, alive with flecks of sun, or where the rippled ridges stand like corduroy, deeply rich and distinct. The weave shifts through the golden foundations of Yellow Ochre, Gold Ochre, and Flaxen Straw, bright with reflected light, before sinking into the muted, earthy neutrals with cool Raw Umber, and classic Beige pebbles. Where the water meets the land, the textures change continuously from silks and satins to the warmth of fleece and woollen coats. The dense, sun-bleached sands of Naples Yellow and Titanium Buff give way to wet coastal sandbars glowing with the peachy-tan of Jaune Brilliant, warm biscuit Tan, and the sun-kissed, semi-transparent depths of Raw Sienna. Deep patches of Tawny camel and the fiery red-brown of Burnt Sienna lie like rich, cured leather next to soft sand that sink the feet, a sensation of plush fur collars. This is where the meeting place begins: the cleansing of the shore. The shingle, stones and shells brush the textile surface as gently as one would wash a child’s clothing. There are concrete ramp steps guiding you down to the beach, opening up a beautiful—if bracingly stony—swim for the brave or those who like a bit of colour in their life. 🤭 And take note, folks: September is actually the warmest month to swim in this coastal area, so it's now or never! If you're looking for facilities, you don't have to guess—there are toilets tucked right to the side of the cafe and shop, and even a pub nearby with plenty of great summer outdoor seating. Best of all, a bag of chips with plenty of salt and vinegar is so, so, so healing after the beach. It's the ultimate bounty to warm you up and the perfect fuel for that 7k cycle back in the rain—just think of the downpour as your final rinse cycle! 😏 From there, you walk through to the Nature Reserve of Killard, another review. I was alone with miles of this sandy carpeted landscape during the mating season for seals. Their calls echo across the space—not a standard "hello," but a deep, resonant Oooo call. It is all you need when you have to pull up anchor you wish could just float your boat away. Ahoy! Heart the Review.
Went for a lovely evening swim with the dog. Very clean place and the water was warm too. Kellies Coffee truck was open to have a lovely macha, latte and ice creams..
Nice quiet beach, however height barrier and my vehicle could not get into car park. Good area to exercise dog.
Love this place as easily the best and least spoilt beach in NI and whole northern half of Ireland along with Benderg bay and Killard point.
Very lovely beach. Wide and deep. Brilliant views from the coast. Small playground by the car park. Car park it self is small with spaces for maybe 15 cars but more parking opportunities along the ciast. Clean, tidy, well kept. There's a wee coffee trailer at the car park but it closes at 5pm and very often they only take cash. In all very good place to chill and relax if the weather permits.
