We stopped in here because it was part of the ticket wit the Jorvik Viking Center and the Dig. Neat reconstruction of a medieval house. It's a neat reconstruction and if I went again I would go to near the end where there's a great documentary video that gives some nice context to the house and the restoration that would have been nice to have as an intro. But the whole thing is well posted. The kids particularly enjoyed playing the old board games. It's also just a fun alley to walk down.

My partner and I visited here today, and had a wonderful experience. Barley Hall is beautiful and has clearly been lovingly restored, lots of information to be found within. A lovely volunteer, I believe called Paul spent time chatting to us about the history of Barley Hall and answered any questions we had. We almost skipped out on this and we’re so glad we didn’t, it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip!

This is a hidden gem in York, really ideal for children under the age of 8 (the still wanting to touch everything age) and still interesting to parents. Nicely contained as an experience and a great introduction to medieval life for young children. We were really pleased with our time here and felt that it was a worthy stop on the "pastport" and another triumph by the York Archaeology Trust in designing museum experiences that engage children and educate their parents!

Brilliant! They carefully reconstructed a medieval townhouse just as it used to be, and even used some of the original timber and an originally medieval hearth. The experience is very hands-on, as you're encouraged to pick up and handle items. Plenty of info cards offer insights into medieval life, but if you don't feel like reading, they're also available in audio format. Additionally, there was an interesting focus on animals in medieval life and their symbolism that I really enjoyed!
