Blyth Beach

Blyth, United Kingdom•4.6(1.3k)•Beaches, Nature Reserve

Explore a 4-kilometre golden sandy beach with grass-covered dunes, revealing millions of years of geological history through rock formations, ice age boulders, and coal deposits.

Blyth Beach, also known as South Beach, is a beautiful 4-kilometre sandy bay located between Blyth and Seaton Sluice harbours in Southeast Northumberland. This easily accessible stretch of golden sand is backed by grass-covered dunes and offers something for every family member—from picnickers on sunny days to surfers when waves are running, dog walkers, cyclists, and runners enjoying the paths year-round. Beyond its recreational appeal, Blyth Beach tells a fascinating geological story spanning millions of years. Visitors can discover three successive geological layers visible on the beach, each revealing different chapters of Earth's history. The oldest layer dates back 310 million years to the Carboniferous Period when Blyth lay on the equator, covered by swampy forests of giant tree ferns. These ancient forests were transformed into coal seams that fuelled Blyth's rise as one of the world's biggest coal exporting ports. Scattered across the beach today, visitors can spot small flakes of coal—remnants of this industrial heritage. The younger geological layers include boulders and clay deposits that bear witness to the great ice ages tens of thousands of years ago, while parts of the dune system may have existed since humans first walked the area. This ever-changing natural landscape provides an ideal setting for families to combine outdoor recreation with geological discovery and learning about the area's rich industrial and natural heritage.

A very good place to enjoy, relax and contemplate the beautiful sea view with its soft waves and the golden sun rays that spread their brilliance across the beautiful white beach. It is a safe place and the children's playgrounds are beautiful. It also provides shops and cafes to have a cup of coffee and eat a piece of dessert and ice cream.

I recently visited Blyth Beach and had a wonderful experience overall. The scenery was beautiful, with clean sands and a refreshing sea breeze that made for a perfect walk along the shore. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy the waves, and take in the coastal charm. The facilities were quite decent – public toilets were available and clean, and parking was easy to find, which made the visit hassle-free. There are also plenty of benches and spaces to sit and take in the view. Just a short walk away, I found a lovely Italian restaurant that served delicious pizza and pasta – a great spot for a meal after the beach. For those looking for some evening fun, there’s even a casino nearby, which added an unexpected but fun twist to the day. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that it could use a bit more in terms of changing facilities or beachside shops, but overall, a great spot for a day out with a mix of nature and entertainment. Would definitely recommend!

Lovely beach with plenty of space and definitely not crowded. Also free parking and tasty fish and chips shop nearby.Ample space at Blyth gardens for relaxing and it’s neatly maintained by the local council.Roads are very neat and well maintained with beautiful see facing apartments located along the road. This would definitely deserve a wonderful holiday, away from all the hustle and bustle at the regular beaches.
