Visit websiteBolton Castle is a striking and beautifully preserved fortress, with towering stone walls and a dramatic presence that dominates the surrounding landscape. Even before you step inside, the scale and condition of the castle make it a memorable visit, and the views across Wensleydale add even more atmosphere. The mix of history, architecture and open countryside gives the whole place a real sense of character, and it’s easy to spend time exploring the grounds, taking photos and soaking up the medieval feel. A fantastic stop for anyone who enjoys castles, heritage sites and scenic rural settings.
This was a great day out. Much better (unexpectedly) than nearby Richmond castle. The castle was interesting with interesting history and structure. Good visitor engagement in all areas. The falconry was cool, as were the wild hogs. The cafe didn't feel particularly welcoming, but was nice enough. The Bolton Pie was great.
Really enjoyed my time here. The staff are friendly and helpful. Lots of history to this place. It's such a shame alot has fallen into ruin. Kids loved walking through the castle and seeing the dungeons and gardens. We sat and watched the birds for a little while before trying out the archery. They even brought a little long bow for the kids to use. The tea room also had great food and was very welcoming and friendly.
Bolton Castle delivers big views, battered stonework, and proper Yorkshire atmosphere. Built in 1399, it’s a place that’s earned every crack and draught. The essentials - Small paid car park — tight but manageable. - Nice little café — unpretentious and welcome. - Inside — basic, some signage, a few props, and plenty of space for your imagination to do the heavy lifting. The history (the good stuff) - Built by Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor to Richard II — so not exactly a minor household. - Home to the Scrope family for centuries, with all the political entanglements that implies. - Most famously, it held Mary, Queen of Scots under house arrest in 1568–69. You can still stand in the rooms she paced. - Damaged during the English Civil War, which explains the missing chunks and the “open to the weather” aesthetic. Much of the castle is damaged, but that’s part of its honesty. You’re not getting a polished heritage attraction; you’re getting a fortress that’s survived sieges, royal drama, and 600+ years of weather. A stunning location wrapped around a castle with real historical heft. Not glossy, not curated to perfection — but full of soul, story, and atmosphere. Why 4* - having to pay for parking on top of an entrance fee.
Well worth the entry price. Could have spent the day here. Excellent displays throughout the day and archery and wild boar feeding. Lovely herb garden. Castle is wonderful, so much to explore and view from the roof is amazing. Great cafe and toilets. Parking costs £5. Great for children and adults. Due to the nature of the building not accessible. No dogs allowed.
