A fabulous, atmospheric place, surprisingly better preserved than I was expecting with interesting information boards in both Welsh & English. Free to enter... perhaps a QR code for donations should be added...
This is a really awesome castle, ticked away at the end of a long narrow single track road. There is parking, and the walk up is easy enough but not for people with very bad mobility. The thing with this castle is it's so much bigger than you think and every time you turn a corner you find another section. There are a couple of very interesting information boards scattered around. I was here with my 7 year old daughter on the hottest day I've ever experienced in Wales and the few breezes that found us were very welcome. I would really recommend this one if you are into castle hunting.
Following its constructed in the 1220's the castle became under siege in 1294 and was apparently burnt. King Edward I decided not to repair it, so the castle became a ruin. The ruins stand on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Dysynni Valley, just a short walk up from a large layby. We visited during a very rainy day and it was still a beautiful view from the top. Free entry and open 24hrs.
Impressive castle ruins in a stunning location. Limited roadside parking down a winding single lane road. A little trek up the hill on a stone and earth (mud) path. Castle is then accessed by stairs. Once up there the views are stunning, especially at dusk (though getting back down in the dark is an experience in itself. No other amenities, it's quite literally a remote ruin.
Beautiful historic site with stunning views Castell y Bere is a fantastic place to visit. There’s a short climb up from the small car park, but once you reach the top the views are absolutely stunning, stretching right across the valley. Hard to believe the castle is around 800 years old when you’re standing among the ruins imagining what it once looked like. It’s peaceful, scenic, and well worth the walk if you’re in the area.
