I’ve walked past this area so many times, but Guildhall Art Gallery still feels like one of those places in London that you can easily miss if you don’t know it’s there. Hidden right in the middle of the City, just a few minutes from Bank, it is a beautiful and peaceful gallery that I have visited several times and it has always been quiet enough to really enjoy the artworks. The collection is not huge, but that is actually what I love about it — you can take your time and properly look at the paintings without feeling overwhelmed. It has a wonderful selection of Victorian art, including some beautiful Pre-Raphaelite works, and the atmosphere feels very different from the bigger, busier museums in London. Entry is free and it is a walk-in gallery, making it the perfect place for a spontaneous visit when you need a quiet break from the City. One of those places that reminds you how many beautiful corners London still has to discover!
Nice gallery in very nice surroundings. Building complex itself quite impressive, inside gallery not massive, but worth visiting - surprisingly some of the paintings might capture you more than expected. Very friendly staff. Was not very impressed with underground level, but it’s quite educational. And of, tube exhibition made me smile - if you are a Londoner , you will understand!
I was delighted to attend the Guildhall Art Gallery organised by Chair of the Bar in Conversation with Dame Victoria Sharp, held on Wednesday 15 July at the Basinghall Suite, Guildhall, London. The event was exceptionally well organised and provided an engaging and insightful discussion on the rule of law, the administration of justice, judicial independence, and the evolving challenges facing the legal profession. Dame Victoria Sharp's reflections, together with the Chair of the Bar's questions, offered valuable perspectives on the future of the justice system. It was an excellent opportunity to hear from one of the UK's most senior judges and to engage with fellow members of the legal profession. Thank you to the Bar Council for hosting such a thought provoking and informative event.
A fantastic art gallery and roman amphitheatre in 1 place. They don't tout the shop, which is nice (I must admit I get fed up having to walk through half a tonne of merchandise either just as I enter and leave... or worse both). Nicely set out area inside and out. The buildings around it are beautiful. Location is great. For a Saturday not overwhelmed with tourists. The main issue we had when we visited on a very hot weekend was that there was no cafe, Pret was closed (probably because it's main clients are business related) and it wasn't easy to find a place to have a quick beverage and snack, lots of restaurants but most of the coffee/ smoothie places were closed.... which is weird to say about London (this is when someone says if we went another direction it would have been fine 🤣). Like I mentioned in another review there are are a few things really close to here including Mithranium and the 2 roof gardens, which are all free and you can spend a few hours going to them all without having to deal with public transport during the visit, obviously you have to get there.... which is convenient as Liverpool Street station is only a 10 minute walk away from here.
Interesting museum which we primarily went to see the Roman amphitheatre and also saw a few famous paintings. We were not impressed by the number of school children visiting at amphitheatre, who were noisily lying all over the glass covering some aspects - supervising teachers didnt move them either - so we left and came back once the y had left.
