Beautiful space with a nice cafe and outdoor space but the museum of the private collection if art and artifacts has been beautifully housed in the art collector couple's previous house (now donated to Cambridge college). Beautifully designed space and the volunteers there were very helpful. Rhey have a room with colouring activities which my child enjoyed as well.
I visited Kettle's Yard over the weekend for the first time. It really is (in my opinion) a hidden gem, and the visit comfortably surpassed expectations. The collection of art, sculptures and ceramics was extraordinary, and was also extraordinarily accessible. Visitors literally get the opportunity to walk through Jim Ede's house (and sit, from time to time!), and view everything as he left it. The collection is likely to be particularly fascinating for anyone with an interest in artists/sculptors with links to Cornwall, such Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood. The staff were extremely knowledge, and very friendly. I should add that the temporary exhibition ('Handpicked: Painting Flowers from 1900 to Today') in the main gallery was well worth a visit in itself, and the gift shop and cafe were both excellent.
I’ve been visiting Kettles Yard for over 40 years so I’m slightly biased when it comes to singing the houses praises. There are few more beautiful places to see British art and it was lovely to see some different pieces this visit. In homage to the beautifully curated free exhibition in the main gallery I focused on the flowers which always uplift me walking around. I appreciate it might seem a bit precious to have to leave coats and bags in the cloakroom but the house is fragile and needs protecting. I was surprised by the entrance fee but it is half price with an art fund card and those moaning about the expense should maybe check if it’s the right place for them to visit. I see a new view every time I go so it’s always a pleasure.
Very unique and quirky gallery though it’s not really a gallery. It’s wondering around someone home. Half price with National Art pass. Timed slots so book one when you arrive. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable
The galleries and house are always a welcome break from reading and writing. This museum is a star in town and the little cafe is a highlight. The food is all vegan and vegetarian and very high quality. I had a delicious bowl of potato leek soup with a slab of dark bread. The portions were generous and the space is relaxed and inspiring.
