The Fitzwilliam Museum is one of the true cultural treasures of Cambridge and an absolute must-visit. Founded in **1816**, it houses an extraordinary collection of art and antiquities ranging from ancient Egypt and classical Greece to masterpieces by **Titian**, **Rembrandt**, **Monet** and **Turner**. The magnificent neoclassical building, completed during the 19th century, is as impressive as the collections it contains. Best of all, admission to the permanent galleries is free, making it easy to spend several fascinating hours exploring over 5,000 years of history, art and human civilisation. Whether you love history, archaeology or fine art, this museum is one of the highlights of any visit to Cambridge.
Thoughly enjoyed my time here. The variety of Art available was spectacular, the layout was very spacious and well thought out. The historic pieces from Ancient egypt was mindblowing and alot of artifacts that i had never seen before at other museums. You can definatly see why this museum has been shortlisted for Museum of the year by the National Art Fund
To be honest i was surprised by the massive collection they have, a little bit of everything: armors, modern and classic paintins and sculptures, tons of ceramics of different times and the real reason of my visit : archeology....didn't expect such a complete collection of artifacts from greek, roman and egypt besides smallr collections of other civilizations, i spent there about 4 hours mostly in the archeology floor, overwhelming, it's free, as negative aspects the cafeteria was small in comparison with the amount of visitants and the museum guide wich i bought for just 8£ is a miniature book! Its very well designed....but they should release an XL version.
I can guarantee you will never regret visiting it. Very nice collection, varies between painting, sculpture and porcelain artifacts (including original Les Sevres, sheffield silver and artifacts from all over the woeld). Of course, the museum has a complete hall foe wgyptian monuments. And it is free to enter! Loved it
The Fitzwilliam Museum is Cambridge’s cathedral of culture, a world-class collection housed in a grand neoclassical edifice that promises—and delivers—profound artistic immersion. Entering beneath its portico and ascending the monumental marble staircase prepares you for the treasures within: exquisite Egyptian sarcophagi, luminous Italian Renaissance altarpieces, and vibrant Impressionist canvases, all displayed with scholarly clarity. My foremost advice is to accept its vastness and choose a focus. Attempting to see everything leads to fatigue. Instead, select a wing—Antiquities or European Painting are perfect starts—and explore it deeply. Always check the schedule for ticketed temporary exhibitions, which are consistently brilliant. While entry to the permanent collection is free, a donation is a worthy investment in this institution. Strategically, visit in the morning when energy and light are best, and use the basement café as a restorative pit stop. The Fitzwilliam isn’t just a museum; it’s a vital counterpart to the university’s scientific and literary legacy, asserting that Cambridge’s genius is also visual, ancient, and beautifully preserved. It is, without doubt, one of the city’s essential experiences.
