I was told by locals that there's a chap who does walks on weekends by prior booking only. Otherwise the area around the castle is free to enter by foot. Be aware the muddy area can be slippery after rains. You can walk the bridge over the moat to the castle door. Parking will have to be roadside.

Arrived at the castle after looking on the website and it saying the opening times/prices. When we arrived for just after 11am, the gate to the car park was locked, and had a sign saying ‘for Guided Tours only’. We were approached by a groundsmans (?) who asked if we were ok. We said we’d come to visit the castle, to which he said the castle is only open for pre booked tours, which were at 11am and 1pm. We were a bit put back, as nothing was mentioned on the website. We were allowed to walk round the grounds as that is open 24/7. Nor great if you’ve come a long way- luckily we hadn’t. The chap also told us the castle status had been ‘down graded’ by the trust, and that opening hours had severely been reduced, and the cafe and shop taken away. Just a heads up for anyone wanting to visit. Beautiful grounds though. Very peaceful, and had fishermen dotted around.

A nice quiet place for a picnic and walk. The only bad parts were that Google decided not to take me to the entrance. If I hadn't noticed the signs, I would have ended up in a farmers field. And the toilet was a single portaloo, which was locked up. Apart from that it's a beautiful place.

This is an absolutely stunning site!! First time I have been here and was definitely worth the visit. The location is wonderful and a fantastic place for picnic. The thing we loved most was the knowledge that the gentleman on reception had to share. He gave us so many answers to our questions and wanted to share everything he knew. All I can say is go! Gorgeous x
