a beautiful building whose heavy, medieval exterior belies its quiet, spacious and light insides. the staff were extremely polite, friendly and knowledgeable, happy to answer all our questions at length on the building's storied past. the poster boards outside expanded on the history in context, and we greatly enjoyed spotting the recurrant motifs elsewhere around the town thereafter

We were pleasantly surprised, we arrived half an hour before closing and just had enough time to view the hall with it's great collection of horseshoes. Staff were very friendly - worth popping in !

Incredible Norman castle! Free to enter and dogs are allowed inside. The ceremonial horse shoes are fascinating and a lot bigger in person than you realise, honestly they are huge! We visited during Oakham’s food and drink festival and it was wonderful seeing the castle admired by so many people. There are lots of information boards telling you the history of the castle and surrounding area

As I was in Oakham on business I decided to have a quick look at the castle as I was in the area (unfortunately on a cold and wet December day!!). Large areas of the outer walls are still standing and the method of their construction can be easily seen plus the main gate archway and the central hall still stand. There is a nice model in the carpark showing the original layout and hall contains a museum which is free to enter. An interesting place and somewhere to return to (in better weather!)
