A beautiful little castle ruin in a friendly and pleasant village with good walking routes in the surrounding area. A large part of access remains fenced off and so our visit was quite quick: a short fifeteen/twenty minute walk around the small walled areas and then off to extend our trip with a wander across the fields.

A history dating back to Roman times, with evidence suggesting it may have been a Roman fort. The castle as it stands today, however, is primarily a Norman creation, with significant construction and rebuilding in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was built to control newly conquered Welsh territory and defend the English border. Great castle, with another great history lesson, only problem is it's a bit overgrown, so you can't really get the size of it.

Small ruins, great if passing. Cute little maintained garden to sit in next to the castle. Local ship and pub within walking distance too.

Takes a few minut3s to look around. Unfortunately, the steps to the tower are still in need of repair and are currently inaccessible, 2023. Lovely village but take care as people.tend to drive quite fast on the country lane to the area.

A really lovely castle ruin nestled in the small village of Longtown. The gate house, inner bailey wall and tower are all well preserved and the short climb up the tower steps is rewarded with stunning views of the nearby valley. Probably 30 minutes is sufficient for a visit but I recommend you take the time to relax in the nearside community garden which is beautifully planted, has ample seating and still falls within the boundaries of the castle bailey which in turn gives a better understanding of the original size of the castle itself. There is no parking on site but the street outside may be sufficient depending on how busy the site is when you attend.
