Visited on a Sunday lunchtime May 2026. Access was okay, yes it's a single track road so you would have to be prepared to reverse if you met someone head on. We were fine in our 3.5 ton campervan. There is room to turn and reverse into parking spot, only space for 4 vehicles. Only one other car there whilst we visited. The castle is quite impressive worth a visit if in the area.
Of the White Castle, and of its great worth to the traveller Let it be known to all wayfarers passing through the green marches that the White Castle is a place of uncommon excellence and noble antiquity. Set high among quiet hills and fair meadows, it stands with great strength, its mighty walls and towers speaking plainly of former days when lords kept watch upon the border lands. He who walks there shall find much to delight the mind. The ancient stones bear the memory of many centuries, and the deep moat, stout gatehouse, and lofty curtain walls make plain the craft of those who built for both defence and lasting fame. It is a place where history lies not hidden, but openly before the eye. Most pleasing of all is the peace of the place. Far from clamour and busy roads, the castle rests in quiet countryside, where only birdsong and the soft wind trouble the air. Such stillness gives rare comfort to the traveller. My good hound Loki found equal joy there, ranging happily along the grassy banks and ancient paths, taking keen interest in every scent and corner. A faithful companion could scarce ask for finer ground to explore. Thus I judge the White Castle to be a place greatly worthy of visitation: rich in history, fair in prospect, and blessed with a calm that lingers long in the memory.
White Castle is a ruined but super nice castle to visit and sits between the villages of Llantilio Crossenny and Llanvetherine. It is part of the 'Three Castles' group, along with nearby Grosmont and Skenfrith. These historic Norman fortresses were built to control the border region, and White Castle is known as the most imposing due to a strong inner and outer ward. It also has an imposing, water-filled, stone-lined moat. It is free to enter and maintained by Cadw.
Brilliant castle to visit. Totally free, full of history with great information. Total visit time is 30-45mins plus there are some nice spots for a picnic. Be aware there is very little parking, 10 cars max and no toilets. Had there been a bit more space for parking and loos this would be 5*
Free access! It was a stuggled to get to for those not used to the fast rocky back roads. However it was worth it as the land was a lot bigger than just the castle. Open grassland surrounded by the origional walls that guarded the main castle! Safe and secure even during the rain! A must see!
