Perfect sensory-friendly day out! 🏰✨ We stayed in New Quay and visited with our daughter who has Autism. The castle itself is beautifully kept and offered a wonderful, calm environment for her to explore. We loved going up into the towers and tracking down the incredible wicker statues! It’s a fantastic, peaceful way to spend a free few hours. Helpful navigational tips: Parking: We parked down at the free lower Cilgerran riverside car park. The Route: The path along the river has no specific sinage for the castle, but if you look out for an early uphill signpost on your left (After the steps, which turned out to be a dead end as too overgrown to pass) it points you toward the castle. The Walk: The narrow, winding path is quite steep and takes about 10 minutes to walk up. It is quite overgrown with brambles, so keep that in mind, if you have mobility issues or very young children I would avoid this route. The Village: We walked back down via the village and popped into the local shop/café (Cilgerran Siop y Pentre). It is incredibly well-stocked, everything looked amazing, and the staff were lovely! Highly recommend this loop!
Great castle, particularly loved the giant willow figures - good to see historic monuments commissioning work from artists. You do need to park somewhere in the village. Cilgerran is a wonderful little village to visit : snacks in the village shop, a pub and beautiful walk down to the river Teifi
Free national trust castle ruins. Dogs can go in. Not massive well worth having a look. You can climb up the steps to the towers and onto the walls and see the beautiful views along the river. The wicker art was fantastic go n have a look. We parked on the free lower carpark (Cilgerran Lower Car Park) in the river tight to get down n not many passing places but have got toilets n picnic benches down there you can walk along the river and then up the steps to the castle and then into the village where there is a shop/ tea room for a little nibble
Castle was good. When we went it was free to enter. Some boards explaining history. Some large wicker statues. Level pathways to castle, but you have to park on the road a few minutes walk away
Awesome views and free entry. We parked in a great location(Cilgerran lower car park), down a steep hill but there were toilets and benches and brilliant river views. It’s then a short walk along the river and up some stairs to get the castle. Lots of space on the castle ground for a picnic but we went mid Sept and the toilets were closed and the drink fountain off. Great for dogs. There is a cafe in town but we didn’t go to it.
