Excellent Motte and Bailey Norman castle to visit. Interesting history. Not vast but with good walking in and around. Close to Okehampton Town Centre.
Checked the website for opening times. Entrance included a audio guide which had good reviews and helpful staff. Gates were open but no staff and no audio guides as the small building at the entrance was all locked up. It's a small castle ruins which are good but don't go out of your way to visit.
There is free parking near the castle. The castle path is very steep, but well worth the journey. There are information plaques which describes some of the castle parts. The view from top is amazing 🤩 There is path around the castle on the ground level as well, to see it from different perspective.
Lovely wander around history and nice picnic area and woodland walk and free parking!
Okehampton Castle in Devon is a fascinating ruin. Originally built in the 11th century as a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, it later became a luxurious fortified manor house in the late medieval period. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the remains of the keep, chapel, and great hall, which provide insights into the lives of its medieval occupants. In the 18th century, the castle became a popular topic for painters interested in the then fashionable landscape styles of the Sublime and the Picturesque. Okehampton station is approximately 1 mile from the castle. It is open Wednesdays to Sundays (closed Mondays and Tuesdays) from 1 April to 31 October 2026.
