Free to enter the outer castle old roman fort grounds, but have to pay for membership to go into the main castle. Nice for a dog walk though as there are long trails behind the castle south side too.
Beautiful castle in a castle! Site has been refortified from ruins multiple times and has history from roman to norman to medieval to ww2. We had an audioguide and spent a wonderful afternoon here.
Lovely castle, well worth visiting, they offer audio aswell as reading throughout. welcoming entry staff, surrounding grounds clean and picturesque, parking just outside is a pay amd display and you could also be lucky enough to bag a spot pf free parking on the nearby roads.
I parked in the Cattle Car Park, £3 ( April 2026 prices) all day on a Saturday as it was right next door to the castle. Owned by English Heritage and £10 adult to get in ( April 2026 prices). I got a audio guide that I strongly recommend and as you go around the ruins there are black number boards telling you what number to press on your guide. There's ruins parts of the castle that still very visible and very interesting to see, Like the Dungeon and the Pillar Box used in WWII. Also there's a exhibition museum of the timeline for the castle. You can still feel some atmosphere of what it was like for the Romans and Anglo-Saxon community and don't forget the Canadian and American Soldiers back in WWII, Who were barracked defending the south coast. The lady who served me was very nice and friendly and the gift shop come, Hot & Cold drinks hut was lovely.
English Heritage run the castle site, admission free applies to the castle. The outer walled area is an old Roman site and is free to walk and visit. Parking is available close-by along with pubs and shops. The site is very well maintained and informative, for those who struggle to read the information boards an audio tour is also available. Dog friendly too.
