A very enjoyable and informative place to visit with lots of history behind it dating right back to year dot all the way in to the 70s very much worth a visit
I am a Korean martial artist who regularly visits the UK to participate in martial arts competitions, and I have a great interest in history. It is said that the massive Round Table here was built during the reign of Edward I and repainted to its current appearance during the reign of Henry VIII. Although it hangs on the wall of the Great Hall, I am amazed to learn that it was actually used as a table during the time of Edward I. I also like the garden, as it has a quiet and cozy atmosphere.
Very cool place of great historical value! I can’t get over that Henry VIII had to slap a Tudor rose on everything.. including THE Round Table after his visit in 1516 (when the table was already hundreds of years old!). The parliamentary wall and stainless steel gates are also not to be missed. Fantastic graphics and storytelling on the exhibition boards throughout.
We visited the Great Hall in Winchester with family on a Tuesday afternoon, and it was pleasantly quiet, which made the visit feel calm and enjoyable. It is not a huge attraction, so it does not take very long to go through, but what is there is very interesting. The highlights for us were the Round Table of King Arthur, the statue of Queen Victoria, the beautiful stained glass, and the gardens around the Great Hall. We also liked the dress-up section, which made the visit a bit more fun and interactive. Overall, it is a smaller site, but definitely worth visiting if you are in Winchester and interested in history. A very pleasant and interesting stop, especially when it is quiet.
From the moment you step inside, you’re struck by the sheer scale and elegance of the building. The soaring stone walls and magnificent timber roof create an atmosphere that feels both grand and welcoming. One of the highlights is, of course, the legendary Round Table associated with King Arthur. Seeing it displayed so prominently adds a sense of myth and magic to the visit. The surrounding gardens are also beautifully maintained and provide a lovely spot to relax after exploring inside.
