Very interesting site to learn about Southampton through the ages. While dubbed a Tudor House, museum exhibits do an excellent job of documenting the house’s many reinventions. Tim was extremely welcoming at the entry and made a point of answering any questions I had and directing me through the site. The garden full of tudor era flora and their uses is a wonderful touch.
I have lived in Southampton for over 30 years & although I took our children there for a half term activity before, we had never properly visited. My husband & I booked the tour with Tim Thorpe-Tracey today & thoroughly enjoyed it. We found out so much about the city & the house & our tour ticket gives us access for a year, which we will certainly utilize. All the staff were very friendly & a special mention to Tim who is clearly very knowledgeable & passionate about the house. Highly recommended for tourists & residents alike.
Friends used this as their wedding venue. The gardens are beautiful with labels highlighting the minibeasts and flora. There is detailed historical information about the area displayed around the garden. The room used for the ceremony looked out over the garden and was laid out so that everyone could see what was happening. The museum displays inside are of life and work from periods when the building was a business and a home. The staff were welcoming and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.
Tudor House & Garden is a beautifully preserved historic museum located in Southampton's Old Town. As the city's first museum, it offers a fascinating window into over 800 years of local history, spanning from the Norman era right through to the Victorian period. Historic Artifacts & Exhibits: The timber-framed building contains interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and audio guides that bring the stories of its former residents to life. The Tudor Garden: Outside, visitors can wander through a reconstructed Renaissance ornamental garden, designed to feature plants and herbs that would have been typically grown during the Tudor period. Norman Ruins: The site also includes the accessible remains of King John's Palace, a rare 12th-century Norman merchant's house located just behind the main building. On-Site Cafe: A charming cafe overlooks the garden, offering light refreshments and cream teas, making it a pleasant spot to relax after touring the property.
I recently visited Tudor House in Southampton for the first time, and I really enjoyed the experience. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a student discount, which brought the entry fee down to just £8—a reasonable price for a historic site like this. You can also use the ticket for an entire year which I think is great in this economy! The house itself is full of character. It’s very old and creaky, which added a slightly eerie atmosphere while walking through, but it also felt authentic and charming. The interior is well maintained, and the garden, in particular, is beautifully kept and adds a peaceful touch to the visit. One thing I did find a bit challenging was navigating the house. It can be quite confusing at times, and I think having staff inside to guide visitors or offer a bit more direction would improve the experience. You can easily explore the whole site in about 15–20 minutes, so it's a great stop if you're short on time but want to enjoy some local history. One of my favorite parts was the collection of paintings—especially the oil paintings. The detail and intricacy were absolutely stunning and made the visit even more memorable. I also want to highlight how friendly and welcoming the staff were. They really helped set a positive tone from the moment I arrived. Bonus tip: St Michael’s Church is right across from Tudor House, and it’s definitely worth a visit too. It adds nicely to the historical atmosphere of the area.
