Visit websiteHad pizza and a couple of drinks. Excellent food and drink and staff were brilliant. Big shout out for Josh who went above and beyond with service. Defo recommend 👍
Great route setting, even better pizza. As a visitor, gave me climbing centre envy! Locals are very lucky to have this on their doorstep.
Really nice gym with great facilities. However the grading here I found really difficult and not clear. I cannot get on board with a v1-v4 grade climb, what is it 🤷🏻. Thats an insane difference in skill, tighten the grading up. Cafe and front of house brilliant, would defo come again.
The york climbing scene is a small one, and a strange one, since it is in reasonable proximity to the Yorkshire grit and limestone sport yet doesn’t seem to have a huge array of indoor climbing and training options. Red goat is the largest bouldering facility in York, and offers a room of boulder problems at a range of angles as well as training tools such as a campus board, woody and circuit board a primitive gym setup. It’s a quirky vibe, with a pool table and table football offering decent rest activity between climbs. The business seems to have expanded every time I visit York, with the most recent addition being a full pizza restaurant attached to the back to bring in the beanie clad hipsters. Something that I have always appreciated here is the technicality of the setting. Whilst often incorrectly graded relative to other indoor centres and outdoor venues, the climbs lend themselves to more technical and learns specific movement in a more old school style rather than basic pulling and strength orientated climbing which is a nice change from the current climate of indoor bouldering. The centre is small though so if you’re someone climbing multiple times a week youll quickly run out of problems betwixt resets (the frequency of which is unbeknownst to me) Whilst the climbing is decent and the wall has most of the training tools experienced climbers seek, I’ve often had some strange interactions with staff (spanning the past 8 or so years, so some of these are of course irrelevant now). For example I (and others who I am close to) have found the owner unpleasant and condescending to talk to in and around the centre, and have had issues in my student days with not accepting a valid student ID. Overall a good centre that has most things an experienced climber needs and a nice restaurant attached.
The Red Goat Climbing Wall is a fantastic bouldering centre full of opportunity and fun! It has limited parking so may be best to park and walk up although outside of working hours there is opportunity to park outside the local businesses and the climbing gym is easily accessible from there, you can’t miss it. Upon arrival, we simply went into the gym and filled out a short electronic waiver. They could see that we were experienced climbers so it was so quick and easy to get climbing once we were asked a few simple safety questions. They supplied us with bouldering shoes in our sizes and there is chalk available if you don’t have your own. The bouldering gym itself was relatively busy, however there was a lot of space as it was HUGE. The training facilities were excellent; there were hang boards, campus boards, pull up bars and more! The grading system was nice as they took emphasis off V grades and instead used colours. We picked out boulders based on how fun they looked rather than difficulty level. Some of the climbs were almost impossible, but we managed to complete quite a lot in the end! The staff were super friendly and so were all the climbers in the gym. Definitely recommend for experienced climbers, but it’s perhaps not as enjoyable for younger children or beginners, due to the difficulty of the climbs. We paid just £10 each for the kids. There is a lovely pizza kitchen there with gorgeous decor and there was what looked like a family party when we went which had a lovely vibe. All in all a wonderful place and we wish we lived closer to enjoy it again!
