Meet rescued donkeys and farm animals across an 80-acre Scottish Borders estate with beautiful river views and hands-on visitor experiences.

The Scottish Donkey Sanctuary is a dedicated animal rescue facility located on an 80-acre estate called The Holmes near Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The sanctuary provides a permanent home for rescued donkeys and a variety of other farm animals including ponies, llamas, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, poultry, and a mule named Muffin. All animals are carefully accommodated in small groups across well-fenced paddocks with permanent pasture and field shelters. | Visitors can explore the beautiful grounds, which feature stunning views over the River Tweed and tree-lined driveways. The estate also includes a handsome Edwardian stone-built stable block with loose boxes, stalls, and traditional cobbled yard. The sanctuary is open to the public on Saturdays by advance booking, making it an ideal family outing for those interested in animal welfare and rural heritage. | Beyond visits, families can support the sanctuary's work through animal adoptions or donations. The venue combines educational opportunities about animal rescue with the charm of a working farm environment, appealing to visitors of all ages who want to connect with rescued animals in a peaceful, pastoral setting.

We are probably slighlty biased as my daughter loves Eeyore and therefore donkeys and has adopted two. However it's a really nice afternoon out, not expensive you are able to feed the donkeys and you can take your dog. It's nicely laid out and your support goes to a good cause. Tie this into a coffee at Harestaines (and a shot in the playpark for the kids) and/or a picnic at Dryburgh Abbey and you have pretty cheap fun day out. There is a walk down by the river and is only about an hour from the outskirts of Edinburgh.

What a fabulous place, I can highly recommend a visit here. From stepping out of your car you get a donkey welcome with lots of braying! A great day out for all the family. Friendly and welcoming volunteers on site too.

First time visitor this weekend and will definitely be back! The Scottish Donkey Sanctuary brought me so much joy and walking around I could see it brought joy to so many others. This gem of a place is run by volunteers who do amazing work. The donkeys and other animals are well cared for in beautiful surroundings. Only open Saturdays, check out their website and book tickets in advance.

We visited on March 29th, just as they reopened for the year. Lovely reception from the staff helping you park. Place is really well laid out and easy to navigate. Lots of Donkeys to visit and feed and great place to walk around. Staff were all friendly and everyone enjoyed themselves. Donkeys, goats, ponies and peacocks!

We Loved it here! The donkeys were so friendly and one particular one took a shine to our boy and gave lots of cuddles. It was a lovely walk around the sanctuary and there were also other animals to see on the other side. We didn't use the cafe or facilities but we did bump into the staff and they were lovely and friendly. This is a great day out for the family and suitable for children of all ages, who can resist petting/feeding a donkey!
