Wonderful park for a picnic with friends. Good toilet facilities available and a creperie with coffee nearby.
The best place in central Oxford for a quiet walk (or a punt!)
The University Parks is Oxford's expansive and essential green lung, a 70-acre haven of meadows, gardens, and riverside paths along the Cherwell. It offers the perfect, free counterpoint to the dense stone architecture of the city centre, ideal for a long stroll, a peaceful picnic, or simply breathing in open space. From a visitor's perspective, its greatest strength is its connectivity. You can seamlessly exit the must-see Museum of Natural History or the Pitt Rivers directly into its landscapes. My key advice is to use it strategically. Plan a walk through its highlights—the Rose Garden, the Pinetum, and the riverbank—as a refreshing interlude between museum visits or after punting from the nearby Cherwell Boathouse. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are extensive. Remember, this is a working university park with sports fields and research gardens, not a commercialised attraction. Facilities like cafes and toilets are minimal, so come prepared. Visit in any season: for spring flowers, summer shade, or the spectacular fiery colours of autumn. It embodies the tranquil, scholarly beauty that defines so much of Oxford’s charm beyond its famous buildings.
Pretty trees, benches and neatly maintained park that allow me to have a relaxing stroll around. I like the little flowers (dandelion and various colourful tiny flowers) on the grass and many squirrels around too. Get to lie on a big log to enjoy the breeze and nature. Super duper love it!
A nice place to chill out in the centre of Oxford. Has some well-kept grass and runs along the river for amazing atmosphere - especially in the summer! There are cows there too. There are some great older trees. Plenty of ducks and uni students punting on the river. It's basically a nice atmosphere to chill out in or take your picnic on the grass. University parks has a fairly gravel path around it if you're using a wheelchair. A rear wheeled powerchair can do it easily. Do NOT attempt to cross any of the bridges if you're in a wheelchair. This park is definitely suitable for most people with autism even in the busy periods because the paths are wide and if you are able to go off path then there are plenty of sweet spots to relax.
