Lovely place to visit. It would be amazing if staff would remember to ask about your English Heritage membership before paying in the shop, as 10% off it's important for some. And they forgot to offer the kids badges, I had to ask. Sometimes this little things makes a places more appealing to return to.

First time visit to Walmer Castle. Within the actual castle, you can visit the Lord Warden's apartment & the Wellington room for a bit of history. You can also explore the moat garden within the castle walls. Outside the walls are the gardens and the woodland walk. There's the Lord Warden's tearoom within the castle walls with plenty of seating both inside & out and also 3 tables up on the Bastion. There's a smaller Glasshouse Café (light snacks & drinks only) by the kitchen garden. Loads of tables on the woodland walk for picnics. No BBQs. A great combination of a bit of history and glorious gardens and woodlands to explore. Top tips: plenty of free parking. Toilets near to the Lord Warden's tearoom (small & cramped) and also by the Glasshouse Café (better and in a purpose built block). Great view over Walmer beach. Gift shop on the way in/out. The gardens are mostly disabled accessible, the castle is not. Check the EH website if applicable. Assistance doggos only so Muttley stays at home. No photography allowed within the actual Castle rooms. Signs everywhere to reinforce this. Play areas for kids on the woodland walk. GW 2:1 offers tremendous VFM but note not valid at BH weekends or on event days. Loads of events on throughout the year. Details on the EH website. A great visit. Thank you EH.

Visited Walmer Castle for the first time in over 30 years—and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. Took the kids (10 & 6), and it’s one of those rare places that genuinely works for everyone. The setting is brilliant, with fantastic sea views, and there’s a lovely café to refuel. Inside the castle is relatively small, but still really interesting and well worth exploring. The real standout, though, is the gardens. They’re superb—beautifully kept, loads to see, and perfect for wandering. The four play areas are a huge win for kids, giving them plenty to do while you actually get to enjoy the surroundings. You can bring a picnic and settle in either the gardens or the old moat, which makes it an easy, relaxed day out. All in all, a great mix of history, space, and family-friendly fun. Well worth a visit.

Quite small for a castle but very interesting. The staff were really knowledgeable and friendly. Absolutely beautiful gardens. Two nice cafes. Lots of parking. Reasonable entry price, if you book in advance you save about 3 pounds each.
