Explore a historic 16th-century castle set within scenic grounds featuring woodland paths and picturesque lake views near Downpatrick.

Audley's Castle is a State Care Monument steeped in Northern Irish history, named after the Anglo-Norman Audley family who owned the estate from the late 16th century. Originally established during the 13th century, the castle was later acquired by the Ward family in 1646 and strategically positioned as a focal point overlooking the artificial Temple Water lake at Castle Ward estate. Visitors can explore the castle grounds via a network of scenic woodland paths that wind through the surrounding landscape, offering peaceful walks and photo opportunities. The site's historical significance extends to popular culture—Audley's Field served as a filming location for HBO's acclaimed Game of Thrones® series, adding to its contemporary appeal. The venue is freely accessible to families and history enthusiasts during designated opening hours, making it an excellent destination for those interested in medieval architecture, Anglo-Norman heritage, and the region's cultural history. The combination of historical interest and natural surroundings makes it suitable for visitors of all ages seeking an educational and scenic outdoor experience.

Beautiful place. Amazing scenery, lovely walks through forest, along the coast and to Castle Ward. 15 - 20 min walk to Castle Ward which has toilets and a lovely art gallery. 10 min drive to Strangford

This castle stands alone on a hill and is also famous because it's a location for Game of Thrones, which housed Rob Stark or Ramsey Bolton's army. There is also a pier where you can look down on all of the scenery around you from above. Audley Castle is a ruin that once stood as a tower constructed in the 15th century, which now lies on the grounds of Castle Ward, owned by the viscount of Bangor. The area was established by the Irish Normans and was given to a knight named John De Courcy in 1177.

Very well maintained, small castle. It is free to enter, and open until 4pm. It has a steep spiral staircase up onto a open walkway with views over the water and the trees to Castle Ward.

Went here as part of a game of thrones tour, lovely location, great walks. Is pretty flat route around the location except for the last little bit of a slope to the castle.

This castle is apart of the game of thrones tour you can do at castle ward. The castle is locked up however you can go directly up to it while wondering around. I will say doing this tour and going to the Cuan afterwards was the best experience. If you are a game of thrones fan this is the place for you. We were lucky enough to get to meet the dogs from the film and a few people who played as extras. So much to see here. Make sure you have your hiking shoes packed and ready to go!
