This was a really well kept and described ancient castle. It's great to be able to climb by spiral stairs to the top ramparts where you get an amazing view of the river estuary.

Well worth a visit, this unique structure sits in a commanding position over looking the estuary and bay below and views of the Mournes to the south. Being able to actually go inside the walls and climb to the battlements which have been reinforced with modern steel stairs and gantry gives an unrivalled experience of how this building would have functioned some 800 yrs ago. Also the cistern viewable from the inside floor of the castle is something I've never seen before and I've seen a fair few castles and it is explained well on the info boards. Good parking and relatively easy access for able bodied visitors, very clean well kept grounds make this a great example of a Norman fortress. Nice place for a picnic or for kids to play as well.

Went here after a day trip to Newcastle , and it didn't disappoint! Well worth a visit very interesting history behind the castle dating back to 1177 ! Along with stunning views of the bay and the mournes

Dundrum Castle is one of the best-preserved castles I've visited so far in life. The courtyard itself surrounding the castle is vast – so much ground to explore – and there are all these different piers around the castle's courtyard where you can climb up and see the beauty in front of you: the whole of Dundrum/Newcastle and the Mourne Mountains. Enriched with so much history, it was another castle constructed by John de Courcy, who invaded Ulster. If you love history and castles, Dundrum Castle is the place to be. 🏰
