The volunteers here are phenomenal! Each person we spoke to was so passionate and knowledgeable. It was fun to visit a place with so much history and to learn about ways that rooms were painted in the past and how materials were sourced.

Mike and Peter were amazing, a couple of passionate volunteers! We thoroughly enjoyed the Ghost tour of the castle, it was full of information of the castle, the history and spooky sightings! Thank you so much for a great evening!

Well worth a visit, especially for special events, but note the restricted opening times, and at weekends only. The Agricola tower with its ancient frescos in the chapel, is really interesting when a volunteer guide can point things out to you, plus there's a good view from the top.

The castle entrance is tucked away in the corner of a car park, so not so easy to spot if the arrive from the direction of the town. We were so lucky to be there on a re- enactment day which was excellent. The castle displays are very informative as were the enthusiastic guides. We are members of English Heritage
