Stunning place, world class, fascinating and almost addictively good. Wonderful tour guides, great value. Creat many memories here. Thoroughly recommended.
Visited the castle today as an birthday surprise, you have to book a guided tour and cannot visit on your own. The castle looks fantastic from the outside and is steeped in history. The tour itself was slightly disappointing as the castle is lived in by students and only small parts are available to view, and the tour only lasts approximately 45 minutes. However the parts we did see were great and the guide was quite knowledgeable, would I recommend the tour to others probably yes but don't expect to see things like battlements, dungeons etc as you may be dissapointed
This is a really great place to roam around and explore at a relaxed pace. The architecture is beautiful, with impressive details that make the building feel historic and full of character. It apparently took more than 40 years to build, which shows in the craftsmanship and solid design. Inside, visitors can enjoy a selection of restaurants and a bar, making it a comfortable place to spend time. The food is sold at reasonable prices, and the alcohol is surprisingly affordable compared to many tourist attractions. Overall, it is a pleasant and welcoming place, and Durham Castle is truly well worth visiting
Book your tickets in advance as it gets booked very fast! Russell the tour guide was amazing and very knowledgeable! The castle was beautiful inside and out and worth the visit!
Our guide was funny and informative, and the castle itself was beautiful. However, you have to book a tour to go inside so are limited to certain times and don’t get to spend an awful lot of time there. Also, because the castle is currently used as housing for some students of the university, a very small portion of it is actually open during the tour. We only saw 5 small sections, one of which was a staircase, and that was all. I think the Cathedral just over the road is a much better shout if you’re wanting to spend time taking in a beautiful historical site.
