What I liked most was the fact there was no one else here and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. There's free parking, and we had a look in the church before heading to the castle. It's a midsized castle, part of which leans at a impressive amount. Look out for the old railway viaduct as well!

Park in the small car park by the church, follow a short path (can be soggy and uneven) and suddenly the castle appears. It began life in the 12th century as a manor house for the de Edlingham family. By the 14th century, border troubles meant everyone was fortifying anything that stood still long enough, so the house gained: - a curtain wall - a gate tower - and the now‑famous solar tower, which is doing a very convincing impression of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. A dry, understated little ruin with more history than stones left standing. The leaning tower alone earns it a visit, and the fact it’s free makes it an easy addition to any Northumberland wander.

This place is brilliant, short simple walk from a free car park, easy to find. It's a very enchanting location away from the beaten track. Very atmospheric, perfect for a cosy walk with a loved one.

A lovely ruin looked after bythe excellent English heritage, slightly off the beaten track. It has the added bonus of a beautiful little church as you enter and the 300 metres walk down a grass way path takes you to the castle ruins. Free to enter, and worth 30 minutes of anyone's time.... No toilets on site.

Great little run around castle ruins for the kids with lovely surrounding views. Free to park and enter. There is also a medieval church that you can view inside.
