My friend and I visited the Judges’ Lodgings on Thursday and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. As collectors of vintage and antique dolls’ houses, the Museum of Childhood on the top floor was our main reason for visiting, and we were delighted by the excellent collection of vintage and antique toys on display. Everything was beautifully presented behind glass, with informative interpretation throughout. The staff could not have been more friendly, welcoming, and helpful. We happily spent a couple of wonderfully geeky hours exploring the displays and discussing our discoveries before having a tour of the impressive Gillow furniture collection in the beautiful first-floor rooms. Our guide was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about the collection. A visit to the restored wash house and a few purchases from the gift shop rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Highly recommended, especially for anyone interested in social history, toys, or furniture.

We came for an impromptu visit to Lancaster and stumbled upon this hidden gem. From the moment we entered the staff were welcoming and friendly. I must say Dave was so informative, enthusiastic and helpful. What he didn’t know about the furniture pieces wasn’t worth mentioning. My son and i thoroughly enjoy our visit and will certainly be back.

This small museum is well worth a visit. The building was used by judges when presiding over the trials in nearby Lancaster Castle, and most of the rooms are set out to show how they might looked in different periods, and also to display furniture made by the famous Gillows company based just across the road. An excellent guide in period costume gave us an insight into the building's history and what life was like for the judges who stayed there. On the top floor is the Museum of Childhood, where you can see examples of children's toys and games from Victorian times to the 1980s. For anyone with an interest in history this museum is well worth an hour of your time, especially as admission for adults is only £5 - and you get a discount on that if you've been on the tour of Lancaster Castle and keep your ticket

A fabulous museum featuring beautiful Gillows furniture and offering a fascinating look at local history. The volunteer staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic who and are passionate about sharing their knowledge of the exhibits and the history behind them.
