Great castle with a good ticket price. Has a cafe, children's play park, displays and a tour if you want. Amazing views and you can free roam. Castle has an amazing history and is definitely worth visiting.
Mont Orgueil is not only a castle but also served as the main fortress of the Island. The castle is located on the east coast of the Island, built on a rocky promontory overlooking the harbour fishing village of Gorey. At the time it was called Gorey Castle. I find the castle expectacular and trully amazing. Its a big castle with never-ending spiral staircases, laira, and rooms; quite mysterious to explore - feels like you are in the medieval ages. You can literally see and smell history. Exploring takes 2-3 hours (i would say) so wear comfortable shoes and clothing, because you will be walking and climbing stairs a lot. It's also pretty windy when you reach the top of the castle, even when you are on its grounds as the location is quite high. Bring water in case, especially when visiting in the summer. There's only one cafe in the caslte and it is located near the entrance, children's play park, and visual. Toilets- you'll find it somwhere in the castle 😅 Its a great place to explore both kids and adults. It's my second time visiting the castle and still fascinates me, and I would visit again 😊👍
I do love a castle and Mont Orgueil did not disappoint. There are so many rooms and nooks and crannies to explore with lots of information about the castle. There are lots of steps and some are quite steep with handrails. It was also quite a climb up to the castle from the bus stop. We took bus number 1 from St Helier to Gorey. There are several ways to get to the castle including from Gorey Pier, but we took a little alleyway behind the public loos which was fairy steep but okay. The views from the castle walls were fantastic, even if it was a bit hazy. There are good toilet facilities and there is a cafe which was unfortunately closed on the day we went. They also offer a 7 day heritage pass which is worth it if you are visiting several places on their list, including the Elizabeth Castle and the Maritime Museum.
A wonderful castle on the East of Jersey, staff were fantastic when we arrived, very chatty and informative. The castle itself is beautiful, lots of history and plenty of steps to the top. We didn’t get to see the breathtaking views we would have wanted due to the fog but that didn’t dampen our day
Lovely ‘private’ tour of the castle today. Managed to park in the street just next to the castle and bought our tickets at 10.58 just before the free guided tour kicked off at 11.00. I have to say it was more luck than judgement. Stanley our volunteer tour guide was superb and incredibly knowledgeable about the castle. The tour should have been an hour but 90 minutes later he was still going. The castle is steeped in history and a labyrinth of room and abundant history awaits. The views from the parapets are glorious when the sun is out. There are a few films you can watch to get a feel for how the castle expanded over the last few hundred years or so. Well worth a visit. Two adults were £38.00.
