Nice castle in good condition. And beautiful area around the castle to have a walk. Close to the sea. Worth to see.

What a fun experience! Beautiful views from each window. The whole thing was very hands-on. The crew was so helpful and welcoming. The gardens were lovely and there is access to the beach. It was easy access if you are on a cruise with the complementary bus shuttle from the port and there is free parking if you are driving.

Our visit to Portland Castle A castle fort absolutely full of heavy cannons, built in 1540 by the orders of Henry VIII. Used as a defence fort against invading enemies entering Portland and the Dorset Coast. It also saw action during the English civil war in 1642. A strong little castle structure which had two walkable floors to explore. Very well constructed and maintained throughout our history. We also loved the little attached walled garden where we enjoyed a nice coffee ☕️ A well worth visit

Stout Tudor fortress on the coast of Portland, with good views across the water and some well preserved historic features. The castle was commissioned by Henry VIII to protect Portland harbour, and completed in the mid 16th century. It shares certain design features with the other Tudor fortresses along the south coast, but is unusual in not being a circular design. The castle has seen various uses over the centuries, and was occupied by soldiers as recently as WW2. Today, it houses authentic recreations of a Tudor kitchen, armoury and gun deck. A digital audio guide is available to help bring the castle's history to life. The site is well managed by English Heritage, with a small garden, information boards around the castle, a welcoming tearoom, little gift shop, parking and toilet facilities. It's worth booking tickets online in advance (at least the day before) to benefit from a discount. At the time of my visit in August 2025, prices were £7.20 per adult, representing fairly good value for a site like this in such a popular destination.

We love this castle, our second visit. The kids loved playing with cannons and dressing up and watching the helicopters land next door. Staff in the cafe were excellent and if you're a member kids eat free which was an absolute bargain! Very clean and tidy. The kids did the quiz although didn't fill in all the questions as the pen didn't work and it was very heavy rain outside. When we handed in their quiz sheets the lady on the ticket office asked them to do it again....this slightly ruined their experience. You don't expect the fun police to be out on holiday! 🤣
